'cuz there's always some other place to explore

Clifton Hill

Back during my early days in Canadia I, of course, just had to see what this Niagara Falls thing is all about, as one should. Aannnd then you get there and are greeted by 14 thousand people all at once. Not my idea of a good time.

What I didn’t know was that’s there an entire entertainment ‘district’ behind the Niagara Falls, called Clifton Hill. And it is mad. Anything from go cart tracks to casinos, restaurants, hotels, ‘museums’, gift shops, arcade halls and strange sculptures in the middle of the street. Also not my idea of a good time, but a sight to behold in its own, quirky way.

This little walk shows just that. Madness. I’m sure it could be fun to run through it with your kids but other than that, it’s just tackiness everywhere you look. If you want to see the Falls, don’t go on a summer day: go out of season (insider top tip). The Falls (and it’s recent upgrades such as ‘Behind the Falls’) can be magical in winter when parts of the river & Falls are frozen over and everything else is covered in tiny frozen and sparkling ice crystals. And there’s fewer people, cuz it’s coooold. The boat ride is cool though but I don’t think it runs through the winter.

Another insider tip: skip both the Falls and the Hill, and booze around the wineries and distilleries on your way there and make a stop at the Butterfly Conservatory before you go back home. Very, very neat. And the last -somehwat risky- insider top tip: wait until another pandemic hits and go visit the Falls then. Zero people. Magnificent waterfall. Just perfect. But whenever you go, skip Clifton Hill. It’s a zoo.
